Understand the online setup, separate devices and proximity-chat limitations before playing together in one room.
Plan Big Walk couch co-op around separate devices in an online session. The Switch 2 store lists one player on a single system and 2–12 online; the PS5 store requires online play. The supported setup is for each player to join the host’s world, rather than share a split-screen view. [switch] [ps5]
Give each player a supported device, access to the game and the required online service for that platform. Choose one host, then use the Join Code steps to connect the others. Crossplay allows the devices to use different supported platforms. [faq]
Before starting the adventure, test communication while standing together in the game. Then move apart and confirm that voices become quieter at a distance. That behavior is part of how the game shares information between players.
House House recommends using the game’s voice or text chat. Both follow the world’s communication rules: distance and soundproof walls can restrict what another player receives. A conversation across your actual couch can bypass those restrictions even when the game blocks the sound. [faq]
Headphones help players hear their own game, but they do not stop someone speaking aloud in the same room. For the intended communication challenges, use separate rooms if possible. If your group stays together physically, agree to communicate through the game during puzzles.
The developer says the entire game can be played through text chat. Text has the same distance, wall and walkie-talkie rules as voice. This gives a group another supported way to communicate without using an external voice call. [faq]
If somebody cannot hear anyone even when characters stand nearby, check the in-game audio settings. On PS5, also make sure Sound → Mute Game Voice Chat is off. Reconnecting the lobby will not fix a system-level mute setting. [faq]
Once everyone can connect and hear or read nearby teammates, let the host start a world setting suited to the minimum group staying for the session.
